Rise, rise, rise, rise Sweet waters, let them rise Lately Leviathan has crept up from the south Up the River Jordan there with its ever thirsty mouth Drinks and drinks and drinks and drinks, it’s never satisfied Down below, the River has died Wild Ox, please my friend, don’t leave your droppings here Let the life-filled waters flow to the valley of tears Stand up with us - stand up - together we will see A land, alive and free Rise, rise, rise, rise Sweet waters, let them rise Rise, rise, rise, rise Sweet waters, let them rise Dark side of hope is that it keeps us paralyzed Waiting for the yonder man, savior from the other side Don’t you see that mystery unfolding over there So let’s cross, not sit and stare Rise, rise, rise, rise Sweet waters, let them rise Rise, rise, rise, rise Sweet waters, let them rise Forty years of searching shows one thing that’s surely true You’ve got to find the river first, before you can cross on through Prophets find the path but they can’t take us to the other side So let’s go, ourselves, don’t hide! Rise, rise, rise, rise Sweet waters, let them rise Rise, rise, rise, rise Sweet waters, let them rise

about

These recordings capture Joey Weisenberg and the Hadar Ensemble performing “Jewish Spirituals” live at Brooklyn’s oldest synagogue. You can hear older styles of Jewish music - nigunim (wordless melodies), z’mirot (Sabbath-table melodies), choral music, and traditional nusach (prayer chant) - organically melding with the spontaneous improvisation, liberated harmonies and indie soul music of the Brooklyn soundscape.

The words, mostly taken from traditional liturgy, all reflect a yearning to discover the eternal spirit that runs through the world.

Thank you so much to all of the singers and musicians who made this music - what a pleasure to get to play every week! Thank you to the Kane Street Synagogue for hosting the Choir Loft Music Series. Huge thanks to Don Godwin for his masterful engineering and mastering work, to Ilusha Tsinadze and Andrew Benincasa for the design and layout of this CD, and to Josh Freed for filming the live sessions. Thank you to all of our teachers, friends, supporters and students who have made this work possible, especially Rabbi Elie Kaunfer and the Hadar Institute, Dr. Chaim Kranzler, Rabbi Sam Weintraub, Rabbi Simkha Weintraub, and to some of the great Jewish singers who have inspired this music - in particular Rabbi Michel Twerski, and my teacher Cantor Noach Schall. Thank you especially to Molly Weingrod and to Lev, Mozi, and Bina Weisenberg, who continuously encourage and support these endeavors.
